BOOK COVERS
Using mainly experimental typography with graphic elements, novel book covers are showcased.
Cormac McCarthy’s The Road and Mary Shelley’s Frankenstein each illustrate coherent cover designs that compliment their respective book’s thematic styles.
McCarthy’s has its front, back & inside covers re-designed as both a soft-cover option as well as a possible cover sleeve for any hard-cover copies.
Both Shelley’s cover pages as well as copy pages are designed to give a more in-depth look into the book’s design
The Road
Emulating the grungy, dirty and desolate imagery described in McCarthy’s The Road, those themes are reflected through the creation of a custom type piece that looks distressed and weathered. The use of negative space within the A becomes the vanishing point of an implied road on the cover accented by a yellow street divider line. Hand drawn elements are scanned and then inserted in order to compliment the post-apocalyptic nature of the story.
Book reviews found online were added to the back cover, while the inner covers contain an introduction to the book as well as a brief biography of the author Cormac McCarthy.
Frankenstein
With Mary Shelley’s Frankenstein having been well appropriated by Hollywood, this design attempts to balance the original text with its contemporary place in horror fiction. A custom type piece is created using stitches to spell out the title Frankenstein, referencing the surgical origins of Frankenstein’s creation. The subtle blood splatter is added as reference to the bloodshed and death within the book while also connecting to the film monster by making it green.
Bodoni 72, a typeface that was first published in the same year that Frankenstein was written, is the only typeface used throughout the book..
